The D. Byrne & Co. Red & White
Wines of the Year

2009 La Chapelle du Marin Cotes du Rhone
Cuvee Patrice Armand
£5.99
Philip visited this grower on a recent buying trip to the Rhone and was very excited by his range of wines. This is made from the brilliant 2009 vintage, rich in juicy fruit and perfectly balanced with soft tannins. At this price the wine offers exceptional value for money – definitely a wine not to be missed – try some this weekend!

2010 Cuvee  l’Ancienne Macon Charnay
£6.99
‘Great value for money’ was the judges’ comments at the Sommelier Wine Awards.
Lovely peachy aromas on the nose leading to a full and ripe citrusy white wine. A long and lingering finish with gentle acidity make this wine perfect to match with food.

Bargain Bordeaux
Bargain Bordeaux purchased from Diageo Chateau estates with American back labels:

2006 Ch. Puy Blanquet Grand Cru St. Emilion £8.69
Easy drinking Claret, this exhibits cherry, plum and soft jammy fruit with a soft finish that is drinking well now.

2007 Ch. Meyney Cru Bourgois St. Estephe £12.89
Meyney is well known for producing excellent wines of consistently high quality. The 2007 is drinking perfectly at the moment, with bright ruby fruit, cassis, mint and a slight spicy finish.

2005 Ch. Pavillon de Poyferré St. Julien £17.89
Produced from 15 year old vines at Leoville de Poyferré, this has all the character and flavour of the ‘Grand Vin’ but does not require decades of cellaring. En expressive nose of Crème de cassis, blackberries, liquorice, spring flowers, a juicy rich flavour and a refined elegance that lingers in the mouth. Classic St. Julien.

2004 Ch. La Fleur de Boüard £17.69
Owned by the owners of Ch. Angelus Lalande de Pomerol fame and located on the same soil as Ch. Petrus. This is a top notch Pomerol at a very good price. Deep colour and good acidity matched by solid tannins, this has terrific black raspberry fruit with hints of truffles (Robert Parker 90/92 points).

2007 Ch. Potensac Cru Bourgois Medoc £16.99
One of the best Cru Bourgois available and very consistent. A wine with layers of rich, black fruit and soft tannins.

2007 Ch. La Gurgue Cru Bourgois Margaux £12.69
A wine we have followed for over 30 years and we are always impressed by the consistent quality and value for money it offers.

2007 Ch. Gloria Cru Bourgois St. Julien £21.69
Now considered Cru Classé quality Ch. Gloria is rich and opulent with powerful aromas of toasty oak, black cherries and smoky coffee, there’s considerable weight and grip on the long finish.

From the brilliant Michelle Lafarge, one of the most sought after producers in Burgundy:

2006  Bourgogne Pinot Noir               £14.89
2006  Volnay                                     £26.39
2006  Volnay Vendages Selection       £30.99
2004  Volnay Vendages Selection       £30.99

Joseph Burrier Ch. de Beauregard Pouilly Fuisse – another grower we have followed for many years after Philip visited his cellars and was very impressed with the range of wine he had to offer. A very pure style of wines showing all the classic terroir of the region.

2009  Macon Vergisson                      £9.69
2009  St. Veran                                  £10.99
2007  Pouilly Fuisse Classique            £15.89
2007  Pouilly Fuisse les Charmes        £19.49

Domaine Ferrand & Laurent Pillot

2008 Puligny Montrachet Noyers Bret £23.49
Great value Puligny Montrachet from a very highly rated producer. Lovely ripe fruit and minerality.
