Andrew's Whisky Notes

Gordon & MacPhail, Scotland's leading independent whisky bottlers purchased, some years ago, Benromach, Speyside's smallest working distillery, producing a large range of different ages and wood finishes.

The first rung on the ladder is the delicious Benromach Traditional 40% vol £20.99. Matured in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks and bottled when it reaches maturity. The result is a rich mellow singkle malt with fruity and malty tones balanced with a hint of smoke.
Also bottled by them is Speymalt from Macallan 2003 43% vol. at £25.99. Sweet sherry influences with a hint of fudge and toffee, this is a very gentle Speyside malt.
From Orkney, the famous Highland Park 43% vol. at £21.99. Bottled at 8 years old, this whisky is initially sweet and fruity with hints of peach and mango. Traces of toasted malt and vanilla develop later. The palate has rich mulled fruit flavours with a touch of smokiness and black pepper.
Finally we recommend the MacPhail's Collection 2004 Bunnahabhain 43% vol. at £25.99. This Islay malt is slightly peaty, matured in a refill sherry butt, producing a sweet and fruity whisky with hints of soft tropical fruit and a hint of chocolate on the finish.
Well worth a visit is the Bunnahabhain website: http://www.bunnahabhain.com/

2011 K-Naia, Rueda 7.49
A fresh Rueda from a top producer who is currently making quite an impact in the UK. A nose of zesty citrus with a rich pineapple layer and hints of mango. The palate is rich with minerality and further hints of tropical fruit. This wine has a lovely intensity and a modern feel.

2009 Naiades Bodega Naia Verdejo, Rueda 16.79
An extraordinary wine produced from ancient vines, well over 100 years old. Intensely powerful 'toasty aromatics' - ripe melon combined with citrus and grapefruit on the palate. A seamless mix of honeyed fruit, structure and richness.

2011 Heights of the Charge Verdejo Viura, Rueda 8.39
The palate of this wine possesses both remarkable depth and a wonderfully luscious quality. Lemony freshness gives way to hints of stone fruit, nectarine and fresh apricot. This enormously satisfying number exudes quality.

2011 Catalan Eagle White, Garnacha Blanca Viognier, Catalunya 8.39
This wonderfully complex wine from Catalonia has a delicately floral nose permeated by grapefruit and earthy clay notes. Citrus emerges on the palate, accompanied by pear and melon, with warm spice and savoury notes. Richly textured and inviting.

2011 Castell del Remei Blanc Planell, Costers del Segre 7.99
A fresh and crisp wine from one of the pioneers of Catalan wine making. Intense aromas of peach, green apple and fennel are lent additional characteristics of white flower and ripe pear by the high altitude Macabeo. The crisp citrus acidity is complemented by almond and floral notes.

2011 Castell del Remei Oda Blanc, Costers del Segre 11.69
A sophisticated, elegant wine with powerful aromatics and balanced oak notes. Tropical fruit, coconut and vanilla on the nose. The palate is texturally excellent, with balanced acidity and great length. Ripe toasty notes linger long after the first sip.
