APRIL/ MAY NEWSLETTER

NEW WINES FOR SPRING

N.V. Blanquette de Limoux Le Moulin – France £10.99
Blanquette de Limoux is one of those odd-ball French sparkling wines with an army of followers, we get asked for it all the time but until now we have struggled to find an example of any real quality.
This is high quality, light, fine and fruity Blanquette with real freshness.

2013 Adobe Organic Viognier – Chile £6.79
Emiliana are real flag flyers for the organics movement and produce the sort of bargain priced flavourful wines for which Chile has become famous. It may seem excessive to list three Viognier’s here, but all offer something different. This example has plenty of body and plenty of fruit but it is also very drinkable, with decent acidity and strictly no fruit pastilles.

2013 Domaine P. Raimbault Sancerre Les Godons – France £11.99
I received a sample of this excellent Sancerre just prior to Christmas, the wine came directly from a friend of the vineyard owners who lives locally. I was blown away by the pristine nature of the fruit and overall drinkability of this fine wine, and the price, well that’s what makes the discovery side of our job so satisfying, because we know that we are passing on ultimate satisfaction to our clients.

2014 Fauno Viura Sauvignon Blanc – Spain £5.59
This wine is the sort of fresh and fruity dry white that is impossible not to like. The slightly dull Viura grape is given some much needed verve, and flavour by the more internationally known Sauvignon Blanc to fashion a wine with mass appeal.

2013 Villa Raiano Fiano di Avellino – Italy £10.99
2013 Villa Raiano Greco di Tufo – Italy £10.99
Two classic wines from a wonderful property in the Campania, both are textbook examples of their respective grapes, are fine, flavourful and very Italian….perfect.

2014 Caparrone Pecorino – Italy £7.59
We see very little these days of new and interesting wines from the Abruzzo, and we see even less from the Pecorino grape, so to find an interesting Pecorino from Abruzzo was something of a revelation.

2014 The Next Big Thing Chardonnay – Australia £8.99
A fresh and tropically fruity style with a touch of oak, the sort of Chardonnay we all fell in love with and one which is definitely making a come-back.

2014 Fauno GSM – Spain £5.59
Appealing nose of plums and blackberries, the palate has more ripe black fruit and supple tannins with a hint of spice. This is a fairly light and excellent value wine from Valencia.

2013 Conviviale Primitivo – Italy £5.99
There are many likenesses and similarities which point at the Primitivo and Zinfandel grapes as being one of the same family. Yes this has the feel of a Zin but it also tastes of the warmth of Puglia and is in its own right an authentic, classic Italian wine of real quality.

2013 Caparrone Montepulciano d’Abruzzo – Italy £7.99
A great combination of rich, spicy, robust flavours with fresh and approachable fruit.
Deeply-coloured red with aromas of violets and ripe black fruit. The palate is warm and generous with attractive black cherry fruit, wild plum, firm tannins and good length.

2013 Chateau Coulon Corbieres Rouge – France £9.59
This is an excellent Corbieres, a proportion of Carignan in the blend provides added freshness and a wild spicy edge.

2013 Clos Bagatelle Saint-Chinian Rouge – France £8.99
In the glass, the wine has a bright ruby colour with a fresh, herby, garrigue nose. A touch of liquorice is followed by full-flavoured and intense, typically southern flavours. Equal measures of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache and a dash of Mouvèdre provide youth, excellent balance and generous and gentle structure.

2009 Fleur de Thenac Bergerac – France £10.99
An outstanding Merlot prevalent Bordeaux blend from the Bergerac, modern and brimming with fruit, think of this as a £25 a bottle right bank Bordeaux from a rich vintage. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

SPECIAL OFFERS FOR SPRING

Castanzu Vermentino Sardinia - Italy          £5.99
This wine has a rich and spicy nose with citrus and ripe tropical fruit, as well as hints of apple, there is a lovely palate weight here with some minerality. Flavours are initially light and build to a textural honeyed feel with hints of lemon marmalade on the finish.

Vedilhan Viognier  - Pays d’Oc – France £5.99
Serica Viognier - Pays d’Oc – France £6.99
Two different styles of the ‘ultra-trendy’ Viognier from the excellent Domaine de Vedilhan. Both wines carry the irresistible perfume and soft exotic fruits that typify Viognier, with the Serica justifying the extra pound after being partially fermented in oak. Either way you simply cannot fail at these prices.

Domaine de la Motte Chablis, Burgundy – France £10.99
A glut of delicious Chablis from the excellent 2012 vintage has seen prices drop…..£ 10.99 is a fair drop for such a posh drop as this so take advantage.

Pablo y Walter Malbec, Mendoza – Argentina £6.99
One of our most popular wines, Pablo has everything. It’s a very funkily packaged bottle of impossibly good Malbec for £6.99, and one that walks from the shelves with good reason.

Mon Vieux Syrah/Tannat, Stellenbosch - South Africa £5.99
This is virtually half its original price, technically a bin end but too good to be burdened with that tag. This is an intriguing mix of savoury flavours coupled with plenty of fresh, sweet and sour spice.

Manon Tempranillo, Tierra de Castilla – Spain £5.99
Manon is quite simply a very good and ultimately very gluggable drop of ripe, juicy fruited Tempranillo.

Terrazze della Luna Teroldego, Trentino – Italy £6.59
Here lies a classic example of the benefits of thinking outside the box. It’s very safe to pick up Shiraz or Merlot and there is nothing wrong with that but would it not be more interesting to astonish your friends with a Teroldego. It sounds like an exotic dance but it is in fact a hugely interesting indigenous grape from the north of Italy…….trend setter or what?

Domaine Mas Barrau Cab Franc, Pays du Gard – France £5.99
To say that Cabernet Franc is enjoying a brief spell of popularity is a massive understatement, and thanks to examples such as this, the slightly lean, green, mean and leafy Cab Francs of yesteryear are long forgotten. This is a fantastic price for a pretty wine with sweetly tinged perfumed red fruits.

Belles Granges Syrah, Rhodaniennes – France £6.99
A former red of the year back at its original price, still the same vintage, the extra year in bottle has actually enhanced what was already a knock out Syrah from a single Domaine just outside Crozes Hermitage. Fresh and nicely peppery.

Pierre Fine Grenat Grenache, Cotes Catalanes – France £6.99
In terms of complexity Grenache is one of those under the radar grapes that has the potential to deliver flavours and aromas of a truly compelling nature. Don’t get me wrong, this is not Chateau Rayas but it is an absolutely delicious drop for £6.99 (was £8.99).

PORT & BRANDY OFFERS

Grahams Six Grapes, Reserve £8.99
Grahams L.B.V. 2009 £8.99
A great saving of £3 per bottle on both of these delicious, rich Ruby Ports.

The perfect gift for anyone you know with a 50th birthday coming up this year. Beautifully presented in top quality individual wooden gift boxes. This exquisite Port displays opulent aromas of butterscotch overlaid with hints of apricot and tobacco with a warming mellow finish.

Torres 10 Imperial Gran Reserva £12.99

BATHTUB Small Batch, Kent 43.3% £34.29
Juniper leads, as it should in any gin, but there’s plenty more besides. Thick and creamy mouthfeel with cloves, coriander and cardamom offering depth. My personal favourite at the moment. (Garnish Lime)

LIVERPOOL GIN, Organic 42% £39.99
Very few gins are made from the finest organic botanicals and organic grain spirit. Ingredients such as coriander, angelica and citrus, plus hand-picked juniper berries result in a gin with a well-balanced nose, complex flavours and a long finish. (Garnish 1: Watermelon, 2: Orange and Mint, 3: Star Anise and Orange).

WHISKY RECOMMENDATIONS

BLAIRMHOR 8 Year Old - Blended Malt £16.99
Full-bodied, sweet and spicy on the nose, revealing floral and fragrant overtones complemented with vanilla and honey. The taste is sweet and toffee-like with a beautifully smooth, long-lasting finish. Well worth a try.

ABERLOUR 10 Year Old - Speyside Single Malt £23.99
A great price for this extremely popular single malt. Exceptionally smooth and creamy, with spicy-sweet nutmeg and honey combining with the freshness of autumn fruits. Long, rich and warming finish of Sherried raisins, hints of toffee and a pleasant nuttiness.

TOMINTOUL ‘With a Peaty Tang’ - Speyside Single Malt £25.59
On the nose a waft of heathery smoke balanced with subtle, fragrant floral and sweet tones. On the palate a persistent vein of smoke and peat eases to an equipoise with the understated barley sugar.

EDRADOUR 10 Year Old - Highland Single Malt £34.99
Handmade in Scotland’s smallest distillery in the hills above Pitlochry. A truly hand crafted malt, Edradour is golden in the glass, with a delicious aroma of sugared almonds and a hint of Oloroso. The smooth, creamy, light malty taste is followed by a mellow, warming finish.

Spring is sprung.....

The Easter Case

White Wines
Pallio di San Floriano Verdicchio, Marche - Italy
Intense and persistent aromas of honey and almond blossom followed by more developed ripe fruit characters. Rich and full flavoured with concentrated peachy fruit balanced by crisp acidity and stony mineral notes. The finish has zesty grapefruit and lime flavours.

Vedilhan Serica Viognier, Pays d'Oc - France
This wine was crafted by partly barrel-fermenting a proportion of the Viognier. The result is a richly textured wine with wonderful aromas of crystallized orange peel and ginger. Subtle flavours of stone fruits are enhanced by elegant creamy oak, which is all perfectly balanced. Barrel-fermentation adds texture and a creaminess to the wine rather than a dominant oak flavour.

Los Otros Pinot Grigio, Maule Valley - Chile
This is a deliciously fresh and fruity Pinot Grigio with the classic aroma and flavour of ripe peaches and a hint of cinnamon spice. Ripe and textural in the mouth, this is a very versatile and very easy drinking wine.

El Viejo del Valle Sauvignon Gris, Casablanca Valley - Chile
The rather rare Sauvignon Gris is a big, aromatic cousin of the Sauvignon Blanc. The nose is nicely evolved and there's real intensity and perfume. The fruit notes are lifted and tropical and marry beautifully with the fresh aroma of waxy lemons. An abundance of gooseberry, mango and melon fruit show throughout the palate and the finish is elegant and long.

El Tesoro Verdejo, Castilla Leon - Spain
The aromas here are of tropical fruit with hints of citrus. The palate also has lots of passion fruit and grapefruit characters with a tangy citrus finish. This is wonderfully crisp and precise dry white that has great texture and weight balanced by good depth of flavour.

Red Wines
Pierre Fine Grenat Old Vine Grenache. Languedoc - France
A ripe and luscious Grenache with plenty of character and soul. With eucalyptus and sweet vanilla on the nose mingled with ripe red fruits, it follows through to the palate brimming with the full-bodied fruit of old bush vines, dark bramble fruit flavours and oak spice with some tasty wood tannins on the finish.

Sassaiolo Rosso Piceno, Marche - Italy
Very ripe and open on the nose with cherry jam and red berry fruit characters. The palate is warm and generous, packed full of rich berry fruit, a touch of spice and a bitter plum twist on the finish. Tannins are gentle and add structure to this substantial and delicious, spicy red.

Scarmiglione Rosso, Maremma - Italy
A deeply coloured Tuscan red which comes from a blend of Sangiovese and Alicante Bouschet. An excellent wine that offers plenty of primary fruit on the nose with red cherries and a hint of black tea and spice. Smooth, savoury and characterful this is a fresh and balanced wine that is easy to drink, yet with real depth of flavour.

Silvermyn Argentum, Banghoek - South Africa
This very classy Bordeaux blend is quite serious with an underlying depth of dark brambly fruit, rich and plummy with hints of warm cloves leading to a satisfying finish. The tannins are fresh and food friendly which further enhance the wine's complexity.

Alaia Prieto Picudo/Tempranillo/Merlot, Castilla y Leon - Spain
Intense aroams or red fruit, woodland, cocoa powder and savoury mushroom notes. The palate is fruity and medium-bodied showing soft blueberry characters with some spice, balanced acidity, and good length.

Emiliana Reserva Pinot Noir, Bio Bio Valley - Chile
Fresh red fruit aromas are supported on the palate with subtle tannins, balanced acidity and a persistent finish. This is a bright, fresh, cool-climate Pinot with sweet red fruits and some seriously silky tannins. Absolutely delicious served with lamb dishes.

Burlesque Old Vine Zinfandel, California - USA
A full bodied Zinfandel, packed with ripe damson flavours and a twist of black pepper spice. Very soft and full of flavour, this is a seriously easy drinking and moreish wine with a wonderfully balanced and persistent finish.

The Easter Treats Case
A selection of six of our most favourite fine wines to enjoy over the Easter period.

2012 Domaine de la Motte Chablis
A lovely and rich wine from the IWSC French Producer of the Year 2013.
A classic Chablis from vines grown on the famous Kimmeridgian clay with nervy, mineral fruit but added depth from a small, around 10%, addition of some oak aged wine into the blend. This is very typical of the Motte style and gives a richness and balance to the wine.

2013 Bodegas Terras Gauda 'O Rosal' Rias Baixas
This is quite simply one of the finest white wines produced in Spain. Grapes are sourced from the O Rosal Valley, with 70% Albarino, 20% Loureira and 10% Caino making up the blend. An Albarino of uncommon complexity with a multitude of citrus and stone fruits wound in a tight mineral blanket, very fresh and textural in the mouth, this is a wine to enjoy with the finest seafood.

2010 San Felice Il Grigio Gran Selezione Chianti Classico
Gran Sleszione is a new classification for the best wines of Chianti Classico - this is produced from San Felice's finest plots of Sangiovese and oldest vines. Enchanting aromas of violets, cassis, tobacco and liquorice. Full-bodied and velvety smooth, the ripe plum and black fruit characters which are enhanced by the fine tannins, beautifully balanced acidity and a touch of spice.

2013 Chapoutier Occultum Lapidem Roussillon
This powerful and highly praised (94-97 WA) Cotes du Rousillon is made from a blend of old vine Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. A wonderfully rich and hedonistic wine, sensationally fruity yet elegant and mineral with an utterly delicious smoky core. To fully appreciate this wine's complexity, allow plenty of time for it to breathe, ideally for a couple of hours.......enjoy!

Domain des Tourelles Marquis des Beys, Bekka Valley - Lebanon
Produced from specially selected parcels of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a densely packed and concentrated wine with blackcurrants and chocolate backed with fresh and spicy flavours which are distinctly Lebanese.

2009 Bodega Bressia Profundo Mendoza
A blend of Malbec, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. The nose includes intense fruity aromas of dark plum and cherry, as well as vanilla and warm oak. An opulent and beautifully rendered palate with great concentration, elegance and length, with flavours of plum, cherry, berries and luscious blackberries. This is an awesome expression of Bressia's vineyards and ambition.

Andrew's Christmas Box
Taltarni Blanc de Blancs 2011 Methode Traditionelle
On my great adventure down under this was one of the wineries I visited. This very pure, very fine wine has an exceptional fruit flavour profile, coupled with great acidity. One of my very fond memories is drinking this at 11am pre-BBQ.
Montagny 'Les Crets' 2012/13 Feuillat Juillot
Earlier this year I visited Burgundy from north to south. This wine, made by a lovely lady, Francoise Feuillat- Juillot, was an absolute delight. It is medium bodied, has lovely fruit and is very fine. Great with white meat or fish.
Sileni 'The Straits' Marlborough, Sauvignon Blanc 2013
This estate wine is a classic regional style, intensely aromatic with gooseberry and passionfruit characters. The palate is rich and full with a long finish. A lovely aperitif or with any fish, particularly smoked salmon.
Ontanon Rioja Reserva 2004
I've missed going to Spain this year, but this bodega is on next year's hit list. From a great vintage, this is proper Rioja, deep dark fruit flavours combined with ample acidity, minerality and earthy notes. It has a fine structure and natural grape tannins giving good length and weight, superb food wine!
Coyam Colchagua Valley, Emiliana 2011
Earlier this year I was visited from Chile by Noelia Orts, who has worked at prestigious wineries in Spain and New Zealand. She now makes impressive and expressive single vineyard 'Siglos de Origen' and the top flight blends Coyam and Ge. She's clearly a hugely talented wine maker and this has to be the Christmas Day bottle!

Krohn 2001 Colheita Port
Always a winner at Christmas, this multi gold award winning vintage tawny port has rich, caramelised berry fruit, perfect with cheese or fruit cake or, indeed, with a nice warm fire.

Joseph's Spirit & Liqueur Recommendations

Whisky
Drumguish Single Malt, Highland £16.99
Soft, medium-dry with good body and a firm but gentle, dark, earthy smokiness.
Speyburn Bradan Orach, Speyside Single Malt £17.49
Classic Speyside single malt. Green apples, honey, lemon and floral vanilla spices. Wonderfully balanced, full-bodied, with a long lasting finish.
Ledaig, Isle of Mull Single Malt £19.99
Distinct peatiness and a prevalence of fresh sea air, seaweed and dry smoke. The long and pleasant finish has a satisfying ginger sweetness with a mellow soft warmth.
The Ileach, Islay Single Malt £22.99
Our biggest selling single malt, not to everyone's taste though. Robust, peaty, with the unmistakable breath of the seashore.
Tomintoul 10 year old, Speyside Single Malt £24.99
The gentle dram. Round, very approachable, with creamy sweetness balanced by gentle oaky spice.
Royal Lochnagar 12 year old, Highland Single Malt £29.99
A favourite of Queen Victoria. Extremely smooth with a slight sweetness. Medium weight, honey, barley and a touch of vanilla.
The Singleton of Dufftown 12 year old, Single Malt £29.89
"Perfectly balanced, naturally rich and smooth" it says on the label - that sums it up perfectly.
Glencadam 10 year old, Highland Single Malt £29.99
Beautifully balanced with tart fruits, freshly cut hay and vanilla sweetness. Long and gentle finish fading out on barley, malt and fruit.
Dalmore 15 year old, Highland Single Malt £47.99
Delicious and rich. Zesty orange, chocolate, winter spice and stem ginger. Hints of anise and a little hickory.
Haig Club, Single Grain Scotch £43.99
As smooth as David Beckham. A great price for this new whisky. Toffee and vanilla with pleasant supporting oak notes.

Other Whisky
John E. Fitzgerald Larceny, Kentucky Bourbon 100cl £34.99
Made with wheat as the secondary grain instead of the traditional rye, Larceny is a smoother tasting Bourbon. Buttery caramel and honey with a long, gently sweet and savoury finish (normal price £41.99).
Teeling Small Batch Blended, Irish Whiskey 70cl. £28.59
A deliciously creamy, spicy and rich Irish blend. Allspice, hints of vanilla, apple pie and blackberries (normal price £30.59).
Nikka From The Barrel, Japanese Whisky 50cl. £30.99
Plenty of winter spice and toffee, a little caramel and vanilla and a good mouthful of fruit. Full-bodied and punchy palate.

Ragnaud Sabourn No. 25 XO, Grande Champagne Cognac 70cl. £80.99
For that something a bit special. Floral nose, with blossom, some sweetness and rose petals. A woody palate with spices, oak-led vanilla and fruit. Long and elegant finish with gentle tannins (normal price £96.59).
Baron de Sigognac 10ans, Armagnac 70cl. £29.99
Lots of roundness on the palate with floral, woody and spicy notes leading to a long and pleasing finish of grilled almonds and vanilla (normal price £32.59).

Baron de Sigognac 20ans, Armagnac 70cl. £42.59
Flavours of violets, prunes and vanilla on the palate. The gentle but long finish reminds one of how mellow Armagnac can be when well-aged (normal price £50.59).

Clean, crisp, sweet, full-bodied and aromatic. Serve with a slice of red apple for an extremely refreshing G&T.
Sacred Microdistillery, London Dry £29.99

The ultimate in gin. An unusual gin made from 47 botanicals from the Black Forest in Germany. Cranberries, woody, spice, the list goes on. All the tastes of the forest floor. Delicious!

Liqueurs

Saliza Amaretto, Bepi Tosolini £19.59

Evan Williams Bourbon Liqueurs £16.99
*available in cinnamon, cherry or honey
A great price on these three very popular liqueurs. Initially sweet, but with a Bourbony after kick due to the 35% vol. alcohol. The cinnamon works particularly well this time of year (normal price 20.29).
