RIOJA WINES - A special promotion

October is ‘Rioja Month’ and to coincide with this we are running several in-store promotions to help to promote the wines from what is undoubtedly one of the world's finest wine growing areas.

The UK market is a large and hugely important market for Rioja wines, and this has been the case for several decades. Rioja wines possess an enviable ability to sell themselves, the wines are seen as a very safe and universally acceptable product that will generally deliver excellent value for money, and as such their popularity continues to grow. It would be fair to say that the finest and most popular wines produced in Rioja are red wines, a good Reserva or Crianza in particular can offer superb drinking and further enhance the Rioja image as a wine that offers excellent value for money.

As a company we have long been admirers of Rioja wines and this is reflected in the massive selection of wines we carry in our stock, we have worked with many of the leading Bodegas and we continue to introduce wines from new and up and coming producers alike.

White Wines
Artesa Viura 2014 - Rioja Baja
A young and very fresh white Rioja made purely from tank fermented Viura, the wine sees no oak ageing at all and as such is a modern interpretation of the more classic barrel fermented style. A fine aperitif or served with lighter tapas dishes, this is as clean as a whistle with floral notes and crispy citrus fruit.
Bodegas Ontanon Vetiver Rioja Blanco 2012 - Rioja Baja
100% Viura aged 4 months in American oak followed by 6 months in bottle prior to release. In contrast to the Artesa this wine is more what we would call a traditional white Rioja. There is a voluptuous mouth-feel of tropical fruit, with some toasted and smoky characters. This is a very fine dry white to drink with seafood.

Rose Wine
Artesa Rosado 2014 - Rioja Baja
This richly coloured rose is made from a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15 % Garnacha grapes and displays plenty of fresh red fruits and a good depth of flavour. Full bodied and dry yet round and very easy to drink.

Red Wines
Vega Piedra Tinto 2013 - Rioja Alta
The house Rioja, and treat it as such, this wine has everything you would want from a perfectly well made bargain priced European red. Lovely fresh red fruits and just the right amount of the quintessential Rioja spice.

Of the three Riojas produced by Telmo, LZ is the youngest and most accessible style, made from old vine Tempranillo, Graciano & Garnacha and fermented and aged only in tanks. Round and mellow this is a lovely Rioja that is soft and open.
Polus Vendimia Seleccionada 2012 - Rioja Alavesa
Awarded gold at the 2015 Challenge International du Vin Bordeaux, this is lovely, mellow wine is made from a selection of the finest parcels from the excellent 2012 vintage. 6 months in bottle, this is the archetypical Crianza. Fresh berry fruits and liquorice along with perfectly integrated sweet and spicy vanilla oak.
Vega del Rayo Reserva 2009 - Rioja Alta
90% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo & 5% Graciano aged for 24 months in American and Russian oak.
An intense wine with aromas of ripe red berries with oak, raisin, cinnamon and spice. The palate is silky and ample with layered complexity - more berry fruit, spice and liquorice building to a meaty finish.
Bodegas Ondarre Reserva 2009 - Rioja Alta
This multi gold medal winning Reserva is made from a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo & 10% Garnacha and aged for 16 months in a combination of French and American oak. Juan de Alzate Rioja Gran Reserva 2004 - Rioja Alavesa

There is plenty of depth and concentration here as well as class, the wine is intense and complex and strikes a perfect balance between freshness and finesse.

SPIRITS, LIQUEURS & SHERRY

THE GREAT SHERRY FESTIVAL
September sees the start of the third annual Great Sherry Festival. Throughout September and October we will be taking part in promoting our range of over 80 different Sherries. With in-store tasting from select Bodegas showcasing the wide variety of different styles.
Manzanilla: A Fino matured in the cool, coastal town of Sanlucar de Barrameda. It is the most delicate and freshest style of Sherry. Zesty and citrus with a very clean, dry, salty finish.
Fino: The palest and driest wines of Jerez. Lovely wines with real lightness and delicacy, very crisp and bone-dry. Equally as fine with seafood or the classic aperitif.
Amontillado: A Fino Sherry in which the flor has died and the wine began to oxidise. Dry wines which are mellow and nutty, rich and complex.
Oloroso: These fine wines are rich and pungent in style but still completely dry. Very smooth, full-bodied and toasty. Best served at room temperature with nuts or cheese.
Palo Cortado: A rare and expensive wine, unique in that it occurs by accident. Between an Oloroso and Amontillado in style. This is a beautiful wine with great depth and fragrance.
Cream: The finest examples are made by sweetening an Oloroso with a sugary must prepared from PX grapes. These are well-rounded, sweet and warming. Great accompaniment to richer desserts.
Pedro Ximenez: This very high quality grape produces the finest sweet wines in Jerez. Very rich and complex with a luscious sweetness. Delicious on its own or over ice cream.

CHASE DISTILLERY: A family owned, single estate distillery, creating fine spirits since 2008 from the produce grown on their own farm in Herefordshire. They use a bespoke, handcrafted copper batch pot and every bottle is filled and sealed by hand.

Williams Chase GB Extra Dry Gin  £26.99

fine botanicals including; cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, almond, coriander, cardamom, cloves, liquorice and lemon.

Use to create a well-balanced Gin and Tonic, or enjoy as a Sweet Martini.
Williams Chase Elegant Gin  £32.99
Unlike most other gins, where a neutral grain spirit is simply redistilled, Chase press their organically grown cider apples from the family farm; fermenting them into cider, then distilling into Naked Chase. They then re-distil Naked Chase with eleven carefully considered wild botanicals and naturally pure water taken from the aquifer running underneath our cider apple orchards.
The result is a full-bodied, sharp, yet fruity gin with tears and true provenance. Botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica, liquorice, orrice, orange, lemon, hops, elderflower and Bramley apple.
Williams Chase Seville Orange Gin  £32.99

Made using potatoes from our family farm in Herefordshire, Williams Seville Orange Gin is a refreshing, citrusy spirit which will leave you wanting more. Juniper, orange peel, liquorice, elderflower and bitter almond are some of the botanicals that make up this unique gin that is finished with an infusion of Seville orange peel for 12 hours. Light nectar in appearance, natural floral oils on the nose, fragrant with elderflower upfront on the palate, finishing with an expression of fresh Seville orange zest. Use to create a refreshing Gin and Tonic, served with a slice of fresh orange, or to create a classic Negroni.
Chase Original Vodka  £31.59
Voted the World’s Best Vodka by the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition, Chase Vodka is the world’s first super premium English potato vodka. Chase are the only UK distillery to offer a premium vodka that is made entirely from seed to bottle, giving a quality vodka with provenance.
To make it, they grow, mash, ferment, strip and distil our own full pedigree, gluten free, King Edward & Lady Claire potatoes.
They use only traditional artisan methods that a distiller of over 100 years ago would recognise. Using their pretty, bespoke copper batch pot and unique 70 foot rectification column (the tallest in Europe), the result is a really pure vodka that is beautifully smooth with a naturally sweet and creamy taste. Great served neat, straight from the freezer. A pure delight!
Chase Marmalade Vodka  £32.99

Strong orange zest on the nose, with a naturally rich bittersweet flavour and a warm velvety mouth feel.
